Rachel Burnett
Rachel Burnett is a Partner and Head of the IT and intellectual property law team at the firm of Paris Smith LLP, following several years as a partner in City of London law firms and seven years running her own legal practice. She acts for commercial clients, IT suppliers, service providers and users, including start ups and mid-range companies.
Her career combines law together with technical and business experience within the IT industry. Originally an IT professional after graduating from Exeter University, she worked for large corporate organisations in system development and project management. She qualified as a solicitor, and joined one of the first niche IT law practices.
Rachel is an experienced presenter both in the UK and abroad, delivering seminars and workshops on the practical management in business of law and intellectual property, contracts and compliance. She is an Associate Lecturer on the Law Programme at the Open University.
She is author of Outsourcing IT: the Legal Aspects, published by Gower, co-author of Drafting and Negotiating Computer Contracts, published by Tottel, both in their second editions, and author of Thorogood Professional Insights Reports: IT Contracts; Commercial Contracts; and Commercial Litigation: the consequences of breach of contract. She is author of the IT Law Guides series published for the Institute of Chartered Accountants. She writes on IT law for journals and professional publications, including as a regular columnist for the IMIS Journal and BCS IT Now.
Rachel has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Technology from Southampton Solent University, and works with the Open University Law Programme as an associate lecturer.
Rachel is Chair of the Computer Conservation Society and a former President of the British Computer Society. She is a Livery member of the City of London Information Technologists’ Company.
